Loose and free
in offshore finance

The
name, Marc M. Harris, doesn't appear on any official list of wanted
terrorists. This Third World freedom fighter does not wear a
red-star beret or shoulder an AK-47 assault rifle.
Harris' uniform is strictly suit and tie. Backed by an army of
lawyers and accountants, his battlefield is international finance
and his home base is an office in Panama City, Panama. |

His chief enemy is
David Marchant, a British
journalist and self-appointed super-cop of offshore finance.
Marchant is the editor of "Offshore
Alert," an international business newsletter in Miami
that has accused Harris of running "one of the biggest offshore
scams of all time." And he says Harris' operation is just the tip
of the iceberg.
"Offshore is a minefield. There's a lot of ignorance out there," Marchant
said. "It amazes me. People think all you have to do is put your
money offshore and watch it grow."
Marchant's criticism prompted Harris to file a $30-million lawsuit
against "Offshore Alert," accusing
Marchant of "recklessly and
negligently" publishing false information to boost his newsletter's
circulation.
Undaunted, Marchant is fond of
quoting his company motto: "The Pen is Mightier than the Fraud." |
