Missing millions at center of bank fight

Intro:

Even on Miami's glittering Brickell Avenue, with a history of both big money and big scandals, the case of Bank Espirito Santo International vs. E.S. Bankest is shocking for its purported size, allegations of misdeeds and troubling unanswered questions.

The plaintiff: Part of the Portuguese banking organization that is among the largest in the world. It says it is owed an eye-popping $170 million.

The defendant: E.S. Bankest, a little-known Miami firm that was a longtime partner and especially close customer of Espirito Santo for years.

Excerpt: Espirito Santo, which has about $40 billion in total assets, would like its money returned, but that's probably not going to happen soon. E.S. Bankest appears to be on the ropes, calling into question where the money is.

At least some of it appears to have gone to a security firm that operates near Washington, D.C., but is itself on the financial brink...<<Selection in Document>>

What's for certain? Really, only this: ''It's a huge amount of money,'' said David Marchant, publisher of ''Offshore Alert,'' a newsletter that tracks money-laundering and other financial crimes in the Caribbean.
