Excerpts: |
-
In March, 1998, articles published in the
newsletter Offshore Alert accused Harris of stealing clients' funds,
of laundering money, and of being broke. Harris sued
publisher/journalist David Marchant for libel, claiming damages of
$30 million. The British-born, Miami-based
Marchant stood his
ground. The trial took place in Miami, in July 1999. Harris did not
appear, possibly fearing that his arrival in Florida would be met
with subpoenas from the SEC, who'd already served two Harris
employees with them. Harris lost the case, appealed, and then lost
the appeal.
- If you believe in fate, then it's easy to
assume that David Marchant's path in life was always destined to
cross Ziegler/Brink's because while Ziegler/Brink was learning his
trade as an offshore conman,
Marchant was learning his as an
investigative journalist who hunts down offshore con men.
