Speaker Biography
Maureen Ward is based in Toronto, Canada, where she is a partner with Bennett Jones law firm. She practises corporate and commercial litigation with an emphasis on fraud matters. She represents both national and international clients in a broad range of matters, including commercial disputes, commercial arbitration proceedings, litigation regarding fraud, competition law matters and contract disputes. Maureen appears frequently before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and has appeared before the Ontario Court of Appeal. Her advocacy experience has also included litigation of issues regarding cross-border litigation, bills of exchange, letters rogatory, credit card and cheque fraud, fidelity claims, civil fraud and conspiracy and bankruptcy matters.
She has experience in a broad range of matters including international letters of credit, recovery issues related to fraud, Mareva injunctions, Anton Piller orders, Norwich Pharmacal orders, tracing, fraudulent conveyances, employee theft, secret commissions, ponzi schemes, offshore banking and money laundering, restitution orders, and disclosure orders. Maureen acts as an independent supervising solicitor for the execution of Anton Piller orders.
Maureen also has experience in the enforcement of foreign judgments and orders, conducting investigations, and working with internal and external auditors. She has also provided legal opinions to insurers on issues in fidelity and has represented clients in a range of industries that include financial services, health care and manufacturing.
She is a frequent lecturer on litigation matters, including those related to fraud recovery, at legal conferences and CLE programs, including for the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators, Ontario Police College and the Canadian Health Care Anti-Fraud Association. Maureen was a guest instructor and also completed the Canadian Police College Integrated Financial Investigations course on Investment Fraud in 2009.
Maureen is a frequent writer on topics specific to her practice. She is co-author of the legal chapter of the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators of Canada Certification Manual and contributes regularly to Legal Alert, a Carswell publication.
Maureen is a member of the International Bar Association.
