Dominica is a beautiful island nation between Guadeloupe and Martinique with about 65,000 residents. Its major attraction is also its major obstacle to development. That is the rugged terrain of the island. It has surface volcanic activity evident at Boiling

Newt Utopia: Chinese if you please!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the bond market and you knew all the rules and regulations and the history behind defaulted sovereign debt, up comes something to show you were wrong. A client brought in for me a number of Chinese bonds that were issued in 20 pound denominations in 1913. The bonds have writing in the front that these can be paid in pounds, marks, rubles or francs. The bonds are written in English, German, French, Russian on, on their face, is written "The Chinese Government 5% Reorganization Gold Loan of 1913". Approximately 25 million pounds (Sterling) were issued.

Newt Utopia: Alberto Salazar, a.k.a. Robert Hoyt

In 2001, Robert Hoyt was a 21-year-old mechanical engineer with a bachelors degree in metallurgy from an Ivy League school. Robert had always dreamed of working on aircraft, specifically aircraft with military applications. He had applied to Boeing and was immediately accepted. He was promoted over the next 18 months from increasingly more important projects. However, the latest promotion required him to apply for a security clearance. For the purpose of this story, the level of the clearance is unimportant, what is important was the US Government subsequently denied the clearance and then asked why he had failed to disclose his prior employment and a nine-year-old felony conviction for multiple counts of money laundering.

Newt Utopia: A tale of fraud and murder

Donald Alan Mueller was a salesman by heart and by vocation. He operated, for many years, as a real-estate business in Ohio.  He worked with customers and had good days and bad days. But even on his good days he could be described, at best, as "difficult".  Sometime in the 1990s Mueller became involved with a group of strict constitutionalists similar to groups that went on to media fame and fortune such as the 'Freemen of Montana'. Specifically, Mueller was a member of the Americans for a Constitutional Republic, an organization that doesn't recognize the authority of the police, state or courts.

Newt Utopia: Cayman Islands – The Fruits of Appeasement

I have been going to Cayman since the early 1980s and I have never seen so much change occur in a small place in such a short time. I still remember the raid on the Bank of Credit & Commerce International when, in the wee hours of the morning, I got to watch the first part of the raid from the parking lot of Burger King across the way from their building, which began with an Armored Personnel Carrier full of soldiers arriving at BCCI's offices. The suits came the next morning.

Newt Utopia: The use of historical bonds in investment scams

Historical bonds have been used in numerous international frauds over the years and have cost suckers many hundreds of millions of dollars. So how do these old worthless bundles of pretty paper get used as "authentic" documents to part the

Newt Utopia: The relationship between HYIPs and children’s fables

A fascinating study, titled "Investment in High Yield Programs and Childhood Fables", has just been released. Underwritten by Prime Bank and written by psychologist Les Moody and international banker Nikolei Putin, it demonstrates a strong correlation between a tot's reliance upon fables for life guidance and his or her likelihood to invest in high yield programs upon reaching adulthood.
